National Parks Of Rwanda
Rwanda possesses four national parks. These comprise protected wildlife reserves and habitats, including Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, Gishwati-Mukura National Park, and Volcanoes National Park.
Gishwati-Mukura National Park was established in 2015, making it the most recent national park to be formed. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) oversees the comprehensive administration of national parks, associated infrastructure, and the promotion of tourism. The RDB receives support from many government agencies and ministries. In several instances, such as the Akagera and Gishwati-Mukura National Parks, the government established long-term agreements with commercial partners to assist in managing various park activities.
Volcanoes National Park, for instance, is home to mountain gorillas, but Akagera National Park is the only location where all five of the major mammals may be observed. Nyungwe Forest is the oldest and most unspoiled montane forest in Africa and is perhaps the top destination for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda. Essential Self Drive Rwanda Tips
Always Book a 4×4: Rwanda’s paved roads are excellent, but park tracks, mountain access roads, and unpaved rural routes demand ground clearance. A Toyota Land Cruiser, RAV4, or Prado is ideal. Never attempt Nyungwe or Volcanoes sector tracks in a saloon car.
Pre-Book Gorilla Permits: Mountain gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 per person and must be booked months in advance through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Do not plan your Volcanoes visit without a confirmed permit — availability at the gate is essentially zero.
Fuel Up in Towns:Petrol stations are abundant in Kigali, Musanze, Huye, and Kayonza. However, fuel is scarce inside national parks and on remote highland routes. Always fill the tank before entering a park or heading into rural areas. Carry a 10L jerry can as backup.
Download Offline Maps: Mobile data is generally good on Rwanda’s main highways, but national park interiors and mountain roads can have poor signal. Download Maps.me or Google Maps offline before departing Kigali. Note that Google Maps occasionally routes you on rough unmapped tracks.
Respect Checkpoints:Rwanda operates police checkpoints across the country. Have your driving licence, IDP (if applicable), vehicle rental documents, and passport accessible. Police are professional and courteous — being organised makes checkpoints quick and stress-free.

Best Season: June–September:The long dry season (June–September) offers the most reliable roads and best wildlife viewing, especially in Akagera. The short dry season (January–February) is also good. Avoid the long rains (March–May) for self-drive — muddy tracks can be impassable even in a 4×4.
